Our Mission, Values, & Vision

The American Kantorei – “Catch the Spirit”

Mission Statement

We offer the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in sacred spaces to the glory of God and for the nurture of our neighbor.

Values:
    • Dedication to excellence in performance of this music
    • Attentiveness to historically informed performance practice
    • Faithfulness to the music’s rich theological core and its message of comfort and healing
    • Commitment to offering sacred programs to the public “free of charge” in a welcoming environment
    • Devotion to drawing a new generation into the orbit of this great music through educational initiatives
Vision:

We dedicate our time and talents to performing the sacred music of J.S. Bach. Our core repertoire is the smaller sacred works of J.S. Bach: the cantatas, Lutheran Masses, and motets. We present these works in dialogue with those of other composers, both past and present.

By the end of the 2020s, and thereafter in rotation, we will perform all his major, large-scale works: the St. Matthew Passion, St. John Passion, Christmas Oratorio, and B minor Mass. We will gradually and sustainably expand our offerings to six full programs per season and add an educational component to our work to the benefit of the greater arts community.
